We’re not a disease—we’re people.

The spectrum includes those who need support and those building the future. Diagnoses have expanded because understanding has improved—not because autism is “spreading.”

This is so, so important for my fellow autistics to understand. A lot of us get concerned we're not "good people" because we struggle to understand others.

The thing that really determines how kind you are is not your capacity for empathy. It's your capacity for compassion.

Empathy is understanding how another person is feeling. It's a neurological mechanism that some brains have high propensity for and some brains have low propensity for.

Compassion is caring about how another person feels, regardless of whether or not you can intrinsically understand their feelings.

You can be highly empathetic and still be extremely uncompassionate, because compassion is a choice we make.

Highly uncompassionate people can be extremely empathetic. They can perfectly understand how someone feels, but not care. Often because they think that person deserves it. You see this a lot with the Church™ crowd.

Highly compassionate people can be extremely unempathetic. That means, they really care about how you feel, but you have to explain what you're feeling. They won't just know.

Empathy doesn't make you a good person. Deciding to be compassionate does.

Interviewing is hard for everyone, but it’s especially hard to navigate if you’re #ActuallyAutistic. Not only is it an additional barrier to employment, the company loses out on potentially great employees. This is why it’s important to design interviews with a diverse range of neurotypes in mind.

Here is a well-paying task which you know in your heart and soul if they just gave you a desk and left you alone and allowed you to do it you would sit there and be more focused and enthusiastic and excellent at it than anyone else in the building. However, before they allow you to perform the task, you must pass through
3-4 opaque social crucibles where you must wear uncomfortable clothes and make eye contact while everyone expects you to lie, but not too much (no one is ever clear exactly how much lying is expected, "over" honesty is however penalized). You are being judged almost entirely on how well you understand these very specific and unclear rules that no one has explained. None of this has anything to do with your ability to perform the desired task.”
