She bends down to the second shelf from the floor. The hem of her skirt touches her ankle. She can feel the stiff nylon of the carpet through the hole in the knee of her fishnets, compressed to millimetres by countless shuffling feet between the rows of books.

Demko... Demsky... Długosz... Christ, it was going to take ages to get all the way to F.

But the library did look beautiful at midnight.
