Linux communities beware of #PewDiePie fans

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

  • People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
  • People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
  • Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

#introduction

Hi all you all know of me.

My name is Stu for anyone who hasn't heard of me.

I like technology and music and golf ⛳.

I love open source platforms and decentralized platforms.

#opensource #bsd #freebsd #linux #fediverse

If you use Linux, might I recommend yazi? Didn't think I'd like a CLI file browser this much, I prefer it to the Caja that came with my DE.

@BoxyBSD was always for BSD based systems only. I focussed to push the whole BSD community and to encourage people to try BSD based systems (such like #FreeBSD. #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, etc.) but I'm not sure if it might provide more value to the whole #opensource community by also supporting #Linux systems (such like #Debian, #Ubuntu, #RockyLinux, #SuSe and more).

I'm not sure if the #BoxyBSD project still provides a value for the community right, now.

What do you think?

Every time I fire up an Elementary Linux host or VM I am struck by how nice the desktop environment looks. Maybe I'll switch back to it at some point.

Personally, I’ve always seen Fedora as Red Hat’s testing lab — not a stable distro.
But Linus uses it as a daily driver anyway.🤷

The catch? Fedora 42 ships a pre-release version of GCC 15, which triggered
issues the kernel wasn’t prepared for

Just updated to #kernel 6.14.3 on my Slackware-current setup.

anyone know a open source selfhostable centralized chatting software like discord or matrix (prefurably for debian)

The best part of the 20 years of Git celebration interview with Linus Torvalds was this bit about his choice of text editor. Which is MicroEMACS from 40 years ago, not used by anyone else today.

Instead of the endless rush to adopt whatever is the hyped tech of the day, you could choose to be more like Linus. Make your own choices based on what you really need.

If it worked for the guy who created #Linux and #Git, why couldn't it work for you?

Linus Torvalds has coded git two decades ago.

With my Linux Mint install the windows have a tiny, almost invisible scroll bar on the right. If I can get the mouse pointer in the right place, it expands to just visible but very hard to land the pointer on for scrolling.

Is there a way to make it wider so that humans can find and use it please?

Thank you.

Today we released a new pair of spins - Fedora COSMIC and Fedora COSMIC Atomic!

An so einem Wochenende können auch neue Freundschaften entstehen: Unser Plushie lernt das Urgestein des @linuxhotel kennen! Denn schon seit 1999 wird die Villa Vogelsang in Essen als Schulungsort für Linux genutzt.

Pulled the plug on my MacBook and ordered a ThinkPad. Planning to run #linux , probably @linuxmint . So if anyone in the community has any advice, tips, or tricks, I'd love to hear about them. 😄

#FOSS FTW 🤘🏻

Anybody in #Amsterdam this weekend, I am volunteering to help install #Linux on people's laptops this Saturday at 1PM.

@fediamigos@a.gup.pe #linux hasta en las golosinas

I'm looking for an #OpenSource static site generator for non-technical users. Ideally what I want is something with a control panel which can be driven with a mouse, which has controls for add new page, edit page, delete page, serve site locally, push site to server.

Needs to work on Windows and Mac. #Linux would be nice, but Linux folk can mostly cope with command lines.

If I can't find one I'll write a WIMP control panel to wrap around #Cryogen.

Any suggestions?

Please boost!

I like that @bazzite.gg already has the @frameworkcomputer quote from yesterday’s event on the testimonial section of their site. 2025 is the year, it’s going to happen this time.

If you’re a Windows user, I can help you switch to Linux. Please stop supporting an insecure and privacy-intrusive operating system. What’s stopping you from switching to Linux/macOS? Ask all your questions, and I’ll answer everything.

I was just watching Slowmo guys when my Mastodon Tab went rogue and drowned all those slowmo noises.

In case anyone sees this:
Hi! I usually don't post about Regex, but mainly about my Marble Machine sandbox game I am working on in #godotengine. Mixed with some #Linux stuff. And games - PC, Nintendo, Atari and more.
