O elefante do Mastodon mal chegou e já se integrou rapidamente à cultura dos anfitriões! :blobcatlove:

Mastodon's elephant has barely arrived and is already integrating quickly into the host culture!

Follow this posing moment of him wearing a straw hat near our baby Araucaria and a chimarrão (mate)*!

Overwhelmed by your support on our #LeavingTwitter post ⬆️.

🌟The #Mastodon community continues to amaze us! Thank you for your thoughtful responses and encouragement.

👋 And welcome, new followers!

🚀1 year since we left #X / #Twitter

Our move to #Mastodon wasn't just a platform switch. It was a leap into #OpenScience in action.

We found a chance to align our communication w/ our values: transparent, meaningful, dialogue-driven.

💜Thanks, 🦣-community, for this wonderful experience. We learn a lot here.

👋We hope to encourage other academic institutions to join.

The #Mastodon stuffed toy is now sold out in the EU (but a 100 units are reserved for the UK). The US ones are technically ready to ship now but we still need to do some administrative work before we can start selling them. Sorry!

A new family member has arrived today 😁😍

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.61 here:

https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/26287

GitHub Actions Continuous Integration checks are progressing (3 out of 4 passed, which is a good sign; I guess MacPorts recently started checking 4 OS versions on GitHub automatically instead of 3 so this is taking a bit longer than I am accustomed to, it seems as if the macos-15 checks in particular are sluggish, maybe that system is overloaded?).

Regardless, it's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.

Neat to see more Mastodon migration improvements! I think I saw one person already boast of successes of migrating their followers to a snac instance!

Thank you for your hard work and continuing to make my favorite ActivityPub implementation even better!

I think that it is a super often shared #mastodon pro tip, but in light of @pluralistic recent plea for #rss i post this again:

You can get an RSS feed for any mastodon account by appending ".rss" to the URL.

My local public transit - @hochbahn - runs a mastodon account and also provides info about service disruptions there. So i just subscribe to that account, instead using apps like Telegram or Notify for it. No ads, no tracking.

oh hey there buddy!

Announcement: The migration to Mastodon v4.3.0 is complete; everything went smoothly, and I did not encounter any issues. I also updated PostgreSQL (from 14.x to 16.x) and am recreating the Elasticsearch indexes. If you encounter any problems, please let me know.

Big congratulations to @jay.bsky.team and the whole @bsky.app team 🎉

With over half a million new users in the last day, Bluesky is demonstrating the power of open social networking and micro-blogging.

Thanks to @snarfed.org you can join in and post to Bluesky by following @bsky.brid.gy

We love to see new social grow, hopefully more to come!

well, I've actually had to block @press.coop because the server is spamming Home feeds with repeated articles from media accounts

getting a social media system that isn't a fuck up should not be rocket science (pun intended)

get your act together @Mastodon

"The Challenge of ActivityPub Data Portability"

a new blog post on web 3.0, data portability, integrity, authenticity, and why it's hard on the fediverse.

I love #mastodon but had to call it out a bit here to explain how it could be better for the #ActivityPub ecosystem.

boosts and polite feedback appreciated ⁂

The wait is over*—The #Mastodon stuffed toy is now available for purchase in the EU! Other regions to come later. Share your pictures with the #Plushtodon hashtag!

Four days ago I commented on a GitHub issue about missing reply threads in the #Mastodon Android app. Coincidentally, the update today has them! Yay!

I'd love to hear something that you like about #Mastodon 4.3. It's been a long time in the works and I think our whole team could use some dopamine 🙂

There's a lot to say about the new #Mastodon version but the most impactful change for me so far is the new boost icon. It now visibly changes when pressed, while previously it would barely change colour/thickness, a difference often too subtle to notice on screens with low constrast/brightness.

If any Mastodon admins are dealing with spam account sign-ups, it's worth noting that these accounts seem to universally use disposable email providers and burner email address. There's a GitHub repo that tracks these providers. All moderation inquiries are sent to a user's email on Mastodon, so there's no legitimate reason any Mastodon user should be using a disposable email address. As such, there's a git repository that tracks these disposable email providers. There are also bash scripts that will import the repository into tootctl for you.

The disposable email git repo can be found here:

And the bash scripts can be found here:

Simply clone the repo and copy the bash script onto your server, then edit the script to point at your Mastodon installation and the directory you cloned the repository to, and it should handle the rest.

Side note: I checked our logs and we had a huge spike in attempted sign-ups from a bunch of different disposable email addresses this week, so I can confirm that blocking them definitely works.

@fosstodon Jump, jump, jump! Everybody loves content layout shift.

Really, @Gargron just happily releases this and nobody checks if it works? What happened to using multiple browsers to test? What happened to using CSS that works?

#Mastodon 4.3 is out! 🎉 We've made notifications easier to manage and improved the look and feel of the whole app across the board. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! See what you can expect once your server upgrades:

Pro-tip: if you move to a new #mastodon instance, make sure you disable email notifications for new follows before you move your follower list over 😂
