He's here... They're here...

John Mastodon #Plushie arrived just in time for #almostchristmas

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social

Not everything has to be shit.
You can help here by realizing #Mastodon is just a part of what makes the #Fediverse great. There's many more alternatives, many of them older than Mastodon, and most of them better in several ways too. Please help in making the Fediverse less shit by understanding more of it.

I am once again astounded by how unreasonably effective FEP 1b12 is at federating content completely.

On NodeBB I have a list of "popular" topics, which is mainly populated based on number of posts within a given time period. For most content from Mastodon-based servers, this supplies a decent signal of a given topic's popularity. The more people you follow, the more effective it is, but overall it's pretty shit at getting you the whole conversation.

Enter 1b12, Lemmy's preferred federation method. Follow a community actor and you start receiving everything that happens in that community. Replies, likes, the whole lot.

It also absolutely dominates my popular feed. It's all Lemmy stuff now because the Mastodon stuff literally can't compare.

Albeit the SNR is a tad lower, so give and take...

@Mastodon

2023?

It's almost 2025 where I am

How about where you are?

And where does the money come from?

If you're curious how #Mastodon is doing by the numbers, the 2023 Annual Report is finally here. How large is our budget, and where does it go? Who works on Mastodon? For all of this and more, we've got an answer--at least as far as 2023 goes.

@Gargron and yet here another humble user, choosing #mastodon over other soon-to-be-shittified social apps. My other area of manifesting myself online is #tumblr ,so, you can have an idea of this loyal weirdo.
Monkey, as usual.

The #Mastodon stuffed toy is now available in the United States! This is a limited run of 500. Check out the #Plushtodon hashtag for more pictures!

And to put the rest in context: #Bluesky and #Flipboard still bring by far the most traffic per follower. #Mastodon is now a little bit behind #Facebook. #Threads and #X bring way, way less.

#SocialMedia

(đŸ§” 4/4)

Another interesting graph is the one showing, where our followers are: Almost 99% use #Mastodon, but the (tiny) rest is pretty diverse. Here at least, the promise of the #Fediverse has not yet really been fulfilled.

(đŸ§” 3/4)

If you combine #Mastodon, #Flipboard and #Bluesky into the #Fediverse, they are not that far from #Facebook. But of course, that's a bit of a stretch (at least for now).
But what's clear, is that Flipboard is not as strong as before. Any tips, on how to get more out of @Flipboard?

(đŸ§” 2/4)

Another week is over, time for new stats regarding traffic to @heiseonline: It seems like there is a new balance with #Mastodon in front, #Bluesky brings now half as much. Although we stopped posting to #X, it still brings in more than #Threads and roughly as much as #Flipboard.

(đŸ§” 1/4)

With our most recent update, creating and editing lists has never been easier in the #Mastodon web app. Lists allow you to declutter your home feed by organizing accounts into arbitrary alternative feeds. And there is some other stuff we may be working on to make this feature even more powerful...

I don't know when #mastodon added this, and I'm not sure I like it.

I don't see this calling out someone's profile as the owner as particularly beneficial to users of an instance, but it's a great way to know whose life to make miserable if you want to potentially take down an instance whose values you disagree with.

That is to say, it paints a target on the back of owners of black & queer instances.

#TIL that one #Mastodon user innocently deciding to switch their existing account to do Automated Post Deletion (2 weeks) can trigger millions of notifications to push out into the Fediverse?

If you are curious the symptom for us was that our Sidekiq push queue was routinely filling up with 250k messages in many batches over about a 48 hour period. Spot checking the messages in the Sidekiq queue indicated that the majority involved a specific user, who helpfully clued us in to the change.

@Gargron @mosseri Interoperability as a general principle is a good thing (and if done on equal and equitable terms), but some of us would much prefer that our posts aren’t accessible by certain networks. Are #Mastodon posts inaccessible by #Threads by default (or would we sadly need to take some sort of definite action to prevent them from being able to access our posts)?

@Gargron @mosseri

eugen it's good news, but only in the scope of championing #activitypub

i don't think when you made #mastodon 8 yrs ago you thought "yes! i get to work with #facebook someday!"

i'm happy you're happy but i step back and see #threads #interop as sad

what you and your team built is amazing and i appreciate all you've done

because it is #decentralized

it's not #centralized #socialmedia hell that is eating our psychology, our societies, our politics

it should stay that way

In December 2021 I set myself a goal: Add a year-in-review feature to #Mastodon before the next December. It's December 2024 and it's finally, slowly rolling out. It's not all that it was meant to be, because we couldn't prioritize it over all the other things we work on, but I didn't want to miss another year.

We believe the internet should be a place where everyone feels safe, respected and empowered to connect.

That’s why this #GivingTuesday we’re launching a campaign to fund a vital new role at #Mastodon:

✹ Trust & Safety Lead ✹

With the recent US elections and many changes to come, protecting our community has never been more important.

We officially kick off on *Tue, Dec 3rd* but if you’d like, you can make an impact today. Thank you for your support!

I might be late to the party, but the Mastodon soft toy / plushie is now shipping to the UK:

ÂŁ45 inc shipping.

One of the prime issues with #mastodon are the overlapping and confusing ways to consume other peoples posts. Do you do it by server? By people you follow? By hashtag? By list?

If the answer is "yes" to all of these questions, then why can't I send a message to all people in a list? How do I form a community *ACROSS* instances?
@Gargron

Then there was this post that correctly points out the sad state of the "official" #mastodon iPhone app. For whatever reason, I find it is *WORSE* than simply using the mobile website from my phone.

It's so buggy and terrible it just sits on my iPhone unopened until one of the infrequent updates gets pushed out. And then I open it only to see that nothing has changed.

@Gargron

Again, the juice.

Bsky is the number one free iOS app in the US right now.

Mastodon is the 184th most popular app in the social media chart. Here are some apps that rank ahead of Mastodon on that chart:

- Pengu, Virtual AI Pets, #20
- Plenty of Fish, the fifth tier dating app, #29
- Skype, #33
- Letterboxd, #38
- Potato Chat, #48
- BeReal, #55
- Yik Yak, #59
- 3Fun, for arranging group sex, #92
- Fizz (???), #95
- Ubisoft Connect, #162

Masto’s leadership fucked the dog here.

The criticisms from this 2022 article are still true today at the end of 2024.

The signup process is too hard and servers are too opaque for users to make good decisions when they come to the Fediverse. One example: some major server instances have blocked threads.net and *then* blocked servers that federate to threads.net. Policies are not evenly applied or even visible to users when they sign up for a server.

@dangillmor Hey, @Gargron can we possibly see some updates that would improve onboarding on #mastodon & the #fediverse ?? ♄

@Gargron #mastodon is it possible to make mastodon populate "person" / "News" of "Explore" on "All server or Other server" rather than the local one when in "single user" mode ?
